The Institute Of Cultural Studies in collaboration with the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Wednesday held an International conference in honour of Emeritus Professor Wande Abimbola. The conference was held to celebrate him as an epitome of knowledge, grace and a worthy life of emulation.
The conference held at ICT, Conference Hall, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, with the theme, “Faith, Spiritualities, And Religion In Africa”.

In his opening address, Prof. Abidemi Fabunmi, the Head of Department, Linguistics And African Languages, expressed his profound gratitude to the attendees. While also acknowledging the achievements of the Emeritus Professor, he made reference to a conference that held in honour of the his 90th birthday last year as a landmark of honour to celebrate his life over the years.
In his attempt to further emphasize the unforgettable impacts of Professor Wande Abimbola, the Keynote Speaker of the day, Prof. Kehinde Jacob Olupona, said he’s (Emeritus Prof. Wande) an elephant, whose size can only be compared to a mountain. He highlighted the Professor’s efforts in promoting Yoruba culture and Ifa doctrines as one that can never be under-estimated .

Prof. Olupona described him as an intelligent enigma, and an unapologetic Ifa priest who steadfastly proclaim his faith irrespective of the situation or environment.
With reference to the adage, “If The gods Intend To Drive Someone To Madness, They Will Take Away Their Language, Causing People To Perceive Them As Deranged”. He Illustrated how Africans have lost their knowledge of traditional healing practices using herbs and roots due to Westernization and the adoption of foreign religions.
Cultural troupes from the Department of Linguistics And African Languages, OAU, and the students of Ifa Heritage Institute, Oyo added to the colour of the event with their exhilarating performances.
In his remarks, the Emeritus Prof. Wande Abimbola, expressed his joy and gratitude by blessing those in attendance during his prayer and blessing “Iwure”. He told everyone present that the only elixir to longevity, wealth and fulfilment in Life is “Being Careful”, and “Living A Violence Free Life” as there is no charm to living a long life.

The event was graced by the presence of notable personalities, such as Prof. Simeon Bamire, the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Ojeniyi Ogunbite, Dean Faculty Of Arts, Obafemi Awolowo University, Prof. Olushola Olurinade, Prof. Y.K Salami, Prof. Barry Allen, lecturers from various departments in Obafemi Awolowo University, Members of the Central Executive Council, Great Ife Students’ Union and other well-wishers.
The curtain of the event was drawn with a Vote Of Thanks by Prof. Gbenga Fasiku, director, Institute Of Cultural Studies.
