Students Can Connect And Reach Out To Real Estate Managers Online Without Moving About And Stressing Themselves– GDSC OAU

The Google Developer Student Clubs at the Obafemi Awolowo University (GDSC OAU) recently revealed its core team members for 2023/2024. The team, comprising both technical and non-technical leads, is set to bring innovation and technology-driven initiatives to the forefront of the university community.

In an exclusive interview with ACJOAU correspondent, the General Team Lead of GDSC OAU, Abayomi Abiodun and the Research & Development Head, Jolayemi Yusuf shared their vision and plans for the upcoming academic session.

Abayomi expressed enthusiasm about the new team and their commitment to fostering a tech-savvy community on campus. He stated that their goal is to create a platform where students can learn, collaborate, and develop solutions to real-world problems using technology.

The GDSC OAU team aims to organize a series of workshops, boot camps, hackathons, and coding competitions throughout the academic year to equip students with practical skills in web development, machine learning, and mobile app development, as well as make them job ready, by the time they graduate.

While Google technologies remain a key focus, GDSC OAU also explores other technical and non-technical domains. The technical team primarily focuses on Google technologies, Flutter, and programming languages. The non-technical aspect involves design and research technologies. Thus, Membership is open to all interested students who share the club’s goals of learning, growing, and contributing to the community.

While highlighting major achievements so far, Abayomi confirmed that they were able to build an application that helps farmers to categorize weeds and crops. GDSC OAU plans to launch research projects that tackle local challenges while leveraging emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, amongst others. Upcoming projects were not disclosed during the interview, but the student community can expect updates as projects progress.

One of the identified problems on campus is the housing issue due to the increasing student population. However, Jolayemi proposed a tech-based platform that connects students with real estate managers to simplify the housing search process.

Jolayemi plans to foster a culture of innovation and learning by collaborating with other teams, both technical and non-technical, as well as external partners, universities, and research institutions. According to him, technology can address digital challenges faced by students. He believes that embracing technology can help solve problems on campus, provided the university is open to collaboration and innovation.

GDSC OAU collaborates with partners and offers support to members with innovative ideas. They have partnered with organizations like Ọpọlọ Hub, OAU DSN, GDSC Oduduwa, Project 99 and are also linked with the upcoming Young Founders’ week to enhance their initiatives.

GDSC OAU boasts nearly 900 members, reflecting a growing interest in technology and innovation amongst OAU students. Balancing academic studies with leadership responsibilities requires effective time management and setting priorities. Jolayemi Yusuf emphasized the need to manage multiple roles.
