Shadow of Democratic Deficit: ACJOAU Raises Alarm Over Electoral Commission’s Lack of Transparency

We, the Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University, are compelled to address a pressing concern that threatens the democratic processes within the university. As the first campus journalism outlet in Nigeria, we have consistently upheld the integrity of campus journalism and we have also provided an avenue for discussion and informed decision-making.

For years, the Press and Debate Night has been an institution, where aspirants vying for positions in the Great IFE Students Union Central Executive Council engage in rigorous debate, telling the students about their vision, leadership records and what is expected of them when elected. This event has served as an important tool for voters to make the right decision at the polls.

However, we are dismayed to note that the Electoral Commission, led by Matthew Ehundor, has deemed it fit to sideline the Press in this year’s debate. This decision is a departure from the conventions of our electoral processes. By excluding us, the Electoral Commission is not only undermining transparency but also denying the students’ body the opportunity to engage with aspirants in a meaningful way.

The Electoral Commission has also raised a case by demanding that the Press issue them the questions we are to ask aspirants for review before granting the press conference request. This action is uncalled for as it tramples on our independence as the Association of Campus Journalists.

Despite all attempts to reach out to the electoral commission via call and WhatsApp messages, no positive response has been given from the electoral commission regarding the Press Night.

We are concerned now that this development is of a larger issue, the lack of commitment to democratic principles that our association holds dearly. As the association of campus journalists, we cannot stand idly by and watch the integrity of the electoral process compromised.

Whatever the outcome, the Association of Campus Journalists, OAU, disclaims any responsibility for the consequences of the Electoral Commission’s actions. We have sounded the alarm, and the ball is now in their court. The student body needs transparency, and we will continue to hold leaders accountable.

We stand by our principles, and the rest is in the hands of those who claim to be leaders.
