A ₦40 million fundraising campaign has been launched to save the life of a Part Two Biochemistry student at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) who is currently battling end-stage kidney failure.
The student, Queen Ologbenla, urgently requires a kidney transplant after being diagnosed at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) in February 2026.
Speaking in a telephone interview with ACJOAU, her mother, Mrs. Rachel Ologbenla, disclosed that Queen’s health challenges began towards the end of her first semester in Part One, when she started experiencing persistent headaches and other health complications.
According to her, medical examinations at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC) eventually led to her daughter’s diagnosis of kidney failure around February 2026. She added that Queen, who was previously healthy, vibrant and academically sound, had to take a leave of absence from the university around May 2026 to concentrate on her treatment.
Mrs. Ologbenla said, ‘Queen has undergone more than 40 dialysis sessions since her diagnosis, with each session costing over ₦100,000. The frequency of the sessions depends largely on how much money we have available, and sometimes she needs dialysis twice a week.’
She further explained, ‘Although the dialysis has helped to manage her condition, it cannot solve the problem. The doctors said the solution is a kidney transplant.’
Speaking on the financial implications, Mrs. Ologbenla put the estimated requirement at ₦40 million, comprising ₦5 million for treatment, medication, dialysis and subsequent medical tests, ₦32.5 million for the kidney transplant, and an additional ₦2.5 million for related expenses.
She also disclosed, ‘As of this morning, we have raised ₦5,020,100, out of which approximately ₦3.5 million has been spent on dialysis. More donations have also come in since then, but I am yet to calculate the total amount.’
Recounting her most difficult moments throughout the experience, Mrs. Ologbenla described watching her daughter lose consciousness during her hospital stay as particularly distressing. She expressed gratitude to family members, friends, neighbours, colleagues, medical personnel and OAU students who have offered support during the difficult period.

Furthermore, Mrs. Ologbenla said the family is appealing to the university management, students, staff, alumni, corporate organisations, philanthropists and members of the public to support Queen financially towards her treatment and recovery.
In addition, Mrs. Ologbenla also appealed to the university community and members of the public to remember Queen in their prayers, expressing hope for her speedy recovery. Also, Mrs. Ologbenla expressed confidence in God’s intervention, saying, ‘I know God is in control. I strongly believe that God will surely perfect everything for my daughter.’ She also appreciated the support received from family members, colleagues, friends, OAU students, and the Dean of the Faculty of Science, while appealing for continued financial assistance towards her daughter’s treatment and transplant.
