The 49th Convocation celebration of Obafemi Awolowo University continued with a strong display of cultural identity that never failed to energise the academic community. On Thursday, 11th December, as part of activities marking the 49th Anniversary of the Obafemi Awolowo University, students were hosted to a captivating stage play centred on Madam Tinubu, a formidable historical figure. The event, held at Oduduwa hall, drew students, guests and members who gathered to experience a dramatic interpretation of cultural history.
The play for the evening focused on Madam Tinubu, a formidable historical figure whose political and economic influence helped shape Yoruba history. It was directed by the trio of Dr. Toyin Ogundeji the Head of Department; Dr. Babatunde Allen Bakare and Dr. Gabriel Otsemobor. Stage direction and management were handled by Kehinde Michael Anjorin, Adewale E. Bamigboye, and Emmanuel Adeboye.

The performance by the Department of Dramatic Arts explored the resistance of Madam Tinubu against British colonial control in Lagos, touching on themes of culture, politics, economic domination, and the exploitation experienced under British colonial rule. It also portrayed Madam Tinubu’s bravery, intelligence, and outspoken nature, showing her as a woman deeply committed to the protection and progress of her people.
The play began at 7:34 p.m. after the arrival of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simeon Bamire, and other guests. It opened with energetic and captivating Eyo dancers, accompanied by strong and rhythmic drum beats performed by students from the Department of Music. Shortly after, another group of dancers dressed in Ankara came on stage with an entertaining and humorous performance. The dances showcased the richness of Yoruba cultural heritage and reminded everyone that Convocation is not only a celebration of academics but also a reaffirmation of cultural identity, historical values, and artistic expression.
The actors in the play were captivating, outstanding, confident, and very natural on stage. Madam Tinubu’s role, performed by Marvellous Akinyemi Boluwatife, a part 4 student from the department of Dramatic Arts, was especially impressive. She was portrayed as charismatic, vibrant, powerful, and emotionally engaging. Her performance felt believable and full of presence, strength, and clarity.
Other cast members included Dr Isaac Ilori, Dr Femi Alabi, and several supporting performers. The Eyo leader, Eyinde Isaiah, and his team, Adewole, A Bamigboye Godwin, Abiola, Adeyemi, David, and many others including staff members who also contributed greatly to the beauty and energy of the performance.
The event concluded with positive reactions from attendees, many praising the cast for delivering a bold and timely performance. To mark the end of the event, the Vice Chancellor, Simeon Bamire came forward to give a vote of thanks to everyone in attendance recognising the principal officers of the institution, the students, and specifically thanking the HOD of Dramatic Arts, Dr. Toyin Ogundeji and Wishing everyone a merry Christmas.
