This announcement occurred during a press conference on Wednesday, June 19, at the Student Union Building TV room. The conference’s purpose was to keep all students informed about election preparations, guidelines, and voter education, and to address important inquiries.
Emphasizing transparency and credibility in this year’s election, the Chairman mentioned that the Central Executives Council (CEC) election will last 48 hours, with results announced on Thursday, June 27, at the SUB TV room.
Taofeek also disclosed plans to increase the number of ad hoc staff to support electoral commissioners and security personnel at polling units to prevent disruptions. Regarding ballot paper distribution, the commission is awaiting a list from the management to determine the quantity needed for each faculty. The Students Representative Council (SRC) election will follow the CEC election, with winners declared immediately after the result in collation at each faculty.
Responding to the release by the Hall Executive Council on the irregularities of allocation of bed spaces this session and how some occupants of the hall could not get their bed spaces through the official student portal by the Division Of Student Affairs, but rather through payment to Remita payment and subsequent conversion to a receipt at the cash office thereby making it impossible for them to get the necessary document from the e-portal for screening. The commission responded by saying plans are already on ground to solve that and the commission had already swung into action even before its attention was called to it.
Stating how that will be tackled, the Chairman of the commission, said the commission will use the slip provided to the concerned persons from the DSA and use that to cross-check the list that will be made available from each Halls of Residence.
Speaking on strict adherence to schedule, the commission assured that it will do everything in its power to make sure that the time allocated is strictly adhered to. As such, electoral commissioners will be at their respective polling units before the allocated time to start the election so the electioneering can start and end as when due. Finally, the Chairman assured proper engagement with the press throughout the electoral process.
