We Will Comply With NLC Strike Directive – ASUU OAU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University Chapter, has revealed that  its chapter would comply with the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress strike directive.

The development was confirmed in a telephone conversation with ACJOAU correspondent in the early hours of Tuesday, 14th November, shortly after a letter issued by the ASUU National Secretariat to its various chapters in the late hours of Monday, as an affiliate of NLC, directing all its members to withdraw from service with effect from Monday, 13th November Midnight.

The letter signed by ASUU National President, Emmanuel Osodeke reads; 

The Nigeria Labour Congress at a joint National Executive Council of NLC and TUC directed all affiliate Unions to commence a withdrawal of services with effect from 12:00 midnight today 13th November, 2023.

As an affiliate of NLC all members of our union are hereby directed to join this action of NLC to protect the interest of Nigerian workers and the leadership of the Union.” 

Speaking to ACJOAU, ASUU OAU Chairman, Prof. Anthony Odiwe, confirmed that ASUU OAU will go in compliance with the National directive.

According to him, the OAU chapter members have been communicated to comply with the National directive. In his word, ‘I have already sent messages and directives to our members. We will comply. I’m getting ready to come to school, we need to drop a letter to the Vice-Chancellor to inform him officially’. 

Meanwhile, the CONUA National Chairman, Niyi Sunmonu has debunked the gone viral X tweet claiming to also follow the NLC directive.

In another tweet by him on the X app, Niyi Sunmonu, said ‘as at the moment of putting together this release, the TUC with whom CONUA submitted affiliation request has not communicated this position on strike action to CONUA’.
