The Global Expedition Was More Than A Competition: Contestants Shared Thoughts On 2023 Global Expedition Challenge

The International Law Students’ Association, Obafemi Awolowo University on 10th, November,2023  held the 4th Edition of the Global Expedition Challenge at the Old Moot court of the Faculty Of Law. The Global Expedition Challenge started in 2017  by the International Law Students’ Association (ILSA) under the leadership of  Oluwaseun Ayansola (Sage).

The event was graced by various dignitaries such as, The Acting Chairman of the Law Students’ Society Electoral Commission, The President of the Tax Club, OAU, The President of Liberation Chambers, General Secretary of the Law Students’ Society, Speaker, Law Students’ Representative Council (LSRC) and Lord Chancellor, Victus Chambers among others. Also, in attendance was  the President of the International Law Student’ Association and some members of the Executive Council.

In her opening speech, Dr. Mrs Ayoola Abuloye, the Staff Adviser of the International Law Students’ Association, encouraged the fresh students to put their academics into good consideration, belong to a single club and chamber so as to ease the burden as a fresh student pursuing a good CGPA of 5.0.

The competition was a rigorous one with different rounds undertaken by contestants. Meanwhile, a total of twenty-five contestants participated out of thirty-five contestants that applied. The top five contestants are Peters Olaniyan, Julius Omotosho, Peter Ojimeke, Temidayo Adeoye and Gracious Adejuwon respectively.

Peter Olaniyan won the competition, followed by Julius Omotosho and Peter Ojiemeke, with cash prizes of Fifty Thousand Naira, Thirty Thousand Naira, and Fifteen Thousand Naira respectively.

Speaking to ACJOAU correspondent, Olaniyan Peters Obaloluwa, the winner of the competition, expressed his gratitude to God, his family, friends and the ‘ILSA’ for giving him the platform. According to him, the competition was fun and full of great people with high intellectualism. 

Gracious Adejuwon, one of the contestants said  ‘The ILSA competition was a little intense, fun, it was everything. We had to learn and memorize all the countries in the world, their capitals and their flags for the first round of the competition and for the second round we were told we would be tested based on international affairs and stuff. We ended up having like six rounds or so and I was nervous through out. I was really scared I was not going to get anywhere because I was not really good with the flags. I had a lot of things to do during the week so I couldn’t really spend as much time to prepare but thank God, God came through. I was literally shivering throughout due to the AC and my nerves, but hey, I was among the top 5 finalists and the only female, and I won an automatic entry into ILSA, thus becoming Ambassador Nilsa. God did’.

Also, Julius Omotosho, who came in second position in his words said ‘The global expedition was more than a competition, it allowed the author to showcase their love for countries, capitals, flags, and current affairs. According to him, he initially hesitated to join the ILSA program.

In an interview with ACJOAU correspondent, Akinyinka Akinpelu, the President Of ILSA  said ‘I was impressed by the raw intellectualism the participants displayed. They were charged with learning the capitals and flags of all the countries in the world and they performed excellently well’.
