Reactions Trail OAU Management Silence Following Students Arrest

In the early hours of November 1st, 2023 the students community were sent into shock as officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invaded some students hostels in Oduduwa Estate, Ile-Ife and arrested 69 students according to the statement from EFCC website.

The unpleasant incident has made students of the institution raise concern on the unlawful arrest of their colleagues both onsite and online.

The Great Ife Students’ Union swinging into action travelled down to Ibadan to secure the release of their members who were arrested unlawfully by the official of the EFCC.

According to series of Live Videos on Instagram from students who travelled down to Ibadan with the Students’ Union, the men of the EFCC were seen fully armed with gun preventing students from gaining entrance into the compound of the EFCC.

Threat such as shooting of teargas were sent sprayed at students on the Live Videos. However, students stood their ground to make sure their colleagues get released from the den of the EFCC.

In what seems to be the twist of the matter, the EFCC uploaded and paraded the students arrested unlawfully on their Facebook page as internet fraudsters. According to the PRO of the EFCC, while speaking with students in Ibadan, he said they received intelligence that there were internet fraudster staying in the affected hostels and therefore decided to go and make the arrest at night because he believed internet fraudsters work at night.

Meanwhile, the students community of the University have been left in shock as nothing have been released from the management of the institution about the unlawful arrest of the students which has been over 16 hours already.

This nonchalant attitude by the institution has however raised concern from the general public most especially the students and Alumni as this same school management always promises heaven and earth and also promises to be fathers and mothers for all students.

Meanwhile as at press time, the Students’ Union present at Ibadan has gotten the release of 58 students out of 69 arrested students.
