OAU TECH WEEK: “Technology Is The New Boy”, What You Lack Is Information And Skills

“Technology is the new boy”, those were the words of Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi the Chairman, Mutual Benefit Assurance PLC, who also is the Chairman of the OAU TECH Week which was powered by the office of the Students’ Union President, Comr. Olayiwola Folahan, “Reform”.

The Tech Empowerment Programme which aim at getting 1000 students of the institution well grounded in Tech soft skills by providing the needed gadgets “Laptops” at subsided price to be paid installmentally.

The OAU Tech Week which kick started on Monday, 26th June of, 2023 with an exhibition which enable an opportunity for seven teams which comprises of students to peach their problem solving technological innovations and the best five teams out of the seven get tech mentorship and monetary fund for their innovative and problem solving ideas.

The second day of the OAU Tech Week Conference which held in the early hours of Tuesday, 27th of June, 2023 at the New Moot And Mock Court with the theme “Tech Impact: Harnessing The Power Of Technology For Positive Change”.

The Chairman of the Tech Week Conference, Dr. Akin Ogunbiyi sing praises of Comr. Olayiwola Folahan, “Reform” the GreatIFE Students Union President for the innovation of the Tech empowerment programme for the Students of Obafemi Awolowo University.

He further added that the likes of Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon all stand out by solving humans’ problems technologically with their innovation and therefore charge students to emulate them.

The Keynote speaker of the event, Mr Tim Akano, the MD/CEO, New Horizon. Who is an alumnus of the institution from the department of International Relations(1983-1987), enjoined that the Tech Week be incorporated in the Students’ Union Annual activities as in turn, he will support with customized master class and mentorship for intending inventors.

He further said that the seven top evolving Tech Skills in the world market which includes Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Binge Data, BlockChain, Cloud, Web 3.0 and Social Media Marketing with an average income of $50,000- $250,000 be prioritized by students. According to him, “There are jobs, what you lack is information and skill”

The panelist session of the event featured technological experts like Mr. Femi Iromini, CEO, Moni, Mr. Kayode Akomolafe, MD/CEO, Chams Mobile Ltd, Mr. Solomon Akporkpokpor, CEO, Classic System Infotech Ltd, Mr. Adegoke Adeboye, Senior Manager Paradigm Initiative and others who shared from their well of experiences in the technology industry, and further emphasizing the need for problem solving idea to continually evolve in the tech space and stressing the need to building a good quality relationship to foster a beneficial career networking system.
