OAU College of Health Sciences Holds Induction For Nursing Graduates

On Wednesday, November 15th, the Obafemi Awolowo University held an induction ceremony for its Nursing graduates to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The ceremony, which took place at the University Amphitheater, saw a total of 393 graduates being inducted. Among them, four graduates earned a Pass with Distinction, while 67 were OAU Distance Learning students.

The induction ceremony was to welcome the Nursing graduates into the Nursing Profession as professional Nurses and also to ensure new nursing students acclimate to the program’s expectations, bringing a sense of belonging and providing essential information for a smooth transition into the demanding field of healthcare, contributing to their professional development and patient care skills.

The induction ceremony was graced by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Simeon Bamire, the Chairman, Committee of Deans, the Deputy Vice Chancellor on Research, Registrar of the University, the Registrar of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Provost, College of Health Sciences, Dean, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and Head Of Department, Nursing Science

The Vice Chancellor of the University , Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, in his opening speech, charged the Inductees to uphold the good name of ‘Great Ife’ in the nursing profession here in Nigeria and abroad.

The Registrar of the Nursing Council who was represented by Dr. Farouk, formally received the inductees into the nursing council of Nigeria. The inductees took the oath of the nursing council into the profession.

In affirmation to the oaths, the newly inductees were instructed to touch whatsoever they believed in, on ground was the Quran, Bible, and a cutlass for different religious beliefs.

Prof. A. Ogunfowokan, made the presentation of Awards to distinct students as follows; Best Student in Maternal and Child Health Nursing who also doubles as the Overall Best inductee; Olatunde Nafisat Olaide, Best Inductee in Medical Surgical Nursing; Ajayi Adebukola Dorcas, Best inductees in Community Health Nursing; Adegoju Oluwakemi Precious; Best inductees in Nurse-Patient interaction; Akinbinufoyin Rosemary among others.

The class Representative of the graduating class- Praeclarus Nutrix, gave a remarkable speech by quoting one of the quote of Nelson Mandela ‘Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world’ he said ‘we have gotten the weapon, let’s change the world through our profession’. He also added ‘Keep attention to your goals, seek guidance and knowledge, keep valuable and true friendship’.

A minute of silence was observed for Ayodele Mary Bukola, who passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic. The class representative concluded by saying, ‘Dear classmates, this is my final remark as your class rep. We came, we saw, we conquered’. The final bow was taken and followed by recession after the class representative speech.

In an interview with the ACJOAU Correspondent, Oluwakemi Precious Adegoju, one of the best graduating nursing students, shared that studying nursing was a difficult and lengthy journey that wasn’t easy. However, she expressed her happiness in successfully completing the program. She said, ‘I am proud of myself for making it this far. It was a long journey, but I am glad I made it. I am very happy to end it in a big way and I’m very, very happy about that’.

Furthermore, she advised nursing students to be resilient, keep pushing and stay motivated. Reading, resting, and praying will help overcome the difficulties. Also, she revealed her plans in studying abroad for her masters degree programme or working there

Olawale Charles, another inductee, acknowledged that whatsoever someone finds his hand doing, it should be done well and everything is possible with God. He further advised nursing students to persevere, noting that he had waited for induction all his life and that he is currently on top of the world. Furthermore, he stated his plans himself to work in Nigeria for a while and pursuing his career elsewhere in the future.

Also, speaking with the ACJOAU Correspondent, Olusola Obadare Samuel, the class Governor of the graduating class. shared his experience as the class representative, He expressed gratitude to God and acknowledged that it took a lot of hard work and concentration to fulfill his responsibilities. He credited his ability to balance his duties to having a good study group and a sense of responsibility, which made the process smoother.
