Management Tells Moremi Queens To Remain Calm Amidst Male Intrusion

The Division of Student Affairs, Obafemi Awolowo University has reacted to the recent security breach at Moremi Hall Of Residence. According to the release, the recent security breach in the Hall Of Residence has been brought to their notice.

Recall it was earlier reported by ACJOAU, that in the wee hours of Sunday, 3rd of December, at exactly 04:00 am, a cry for help drew the attention of Moremi Queens to block E of Moremi Hall of Residence where a person dressed in makeup and disguised as a woman attempted to escape after a reported case of attempted rape of a female occupant of the Hall. The identity of the victim has been kept confidential for privacy reasons.

The School management through the release implores the residents of the hall to uphold the security consciousness that OAU students are known for. It also stated that the management is making deliberate efforts to know the causes of the incidents and also provide measures to stall future occurrences.

Furthermore, the Division Of Student Affairs enjoined students in the hall of residence to remain calm and continue to go about their daily activities with no fear.

Hall Chairperson Gives Recommendations To Stall Future Incidents

Speaking to ACJOAU correspondent, The Chairperson of Moremi Hall, Ewaoluwa Alawode, said for every incident, the hall warden and porters became aware when they raised an alarm which is always between 02:00 am to 05:00 am. According to her, the hall warden and porters have been on top of it.

Speaking further, she said in response to the previous incidences, ‘the porters had heightened their vigilance, the Division of Student Affairs was also making efforts towards increased security measures, and the CSO of the school had even queried some of the vigilante men over their negligence’.

According to her, she does not know the causes of the occurrences as one can not know the motivating factor in the mind of an evildoer. She, however, thinks certain environmental factors have contributed to it, as the fencing around the hall is very low, most especially around the architecture department

The lack of illumination in 4 blocks out of 8 as 4 blocks are renovated and fully lit and there have been no recorded incidents in those blocks, however, the other four have repeatedly recorded security breaches.

Furthermore, she noted that negligence on the part of the students by leaving their doors unlocked and unsupervised at odd hours contributed to the security breaches.

Ewaoluwa further believed that lighting up blocks E to H, lighting up the perimeter of the hall, and installing barbed wire around the Hall Of Residence fences, which would be a more feasible option to installing a higher fence, empowering and equipping the vigilante men attached to the hall as part of her security recommendations in preventing future occurrences

In all, the school management has stated it has zero tolerance for any form of criminal act and the culprits will be apprehended and brought to book as efforts are being made to identify and apprehend the culprits
