Freshermen of the 2024/2025 academic session have opened up about what the social scene on campus really feels like, drawing from their experiences at various events since resuming. In an exclusive conversation with an ACJOAU correspondent during a visit to their campus residence this week, the new students shared their thoughts on the university’s overall social atmosphere.
Since their official resumption in October, the freshmen have witnessed numerous entertaining activities both on and off campus, with the most popular ones being the Blaqbonez homecoming show, OAU Concert 2.0, and Anglomoz freshers’ party. These gatherings attracted large numbers of freshers, highlighting their enthusiasm and strong interest in the campus social scene.

While some of the new intakes attended all the events, others attended only a few or just one, most share a similar narrative of their experiences, except for a minority who have otherwise to say.
Adeyemo Joshua, a part one Sociology and Anthropology student, said, ‘I have attended two events so far, and I had a lot of fun at both of them. In OAU, social life is a big deal, and people love coming together to celebrate, share stories, and support one another. Whether it’s hanging out with friends at a trendy spot, joining a cultural festival in town, or simply chilling with family and neighbours, social life is all about nurturing bonds and creating a sense of belonging. So, through those events, I was able to build connections and share experiences.’
A freshman from the Department of Architecture said, ‘I have been to four events on campus, and they were all very entertaining and fun. OAU’s social atmosphere is very interesting and exciting. Especially the concerts, the vibes were excellent all around. Also, despite some lasting till late at night, because of how good OAU’s security is, it was always safe to stay for as long as you desired.’
Ayomide from Dramatic Arts said, ‘Blaqbonez’ homecoming show was cool and interesting. It was full of vibes and energy. OAU is a very interesting place to be in because you get to meet with people and talk with those who are like-minded and fun as you.’
Furthermore, while reflecting on the fun they have had so far, some students cited that they were satisfied with the events and activities they have participated in, adding that they now want to concentrate fully on their academics, which is the main reason they are in school.
According to Oluwasemilore, a Mass Communication student, ‘OAU is very lively and interesting, but attending parties must not be too much because of academics. For now, I am okay with the three events I attended.’
Oluwaseun from the Chemistry Department said, ‘There’s always something going on on campus. Some are always interesting, and some are also boring. I have been to three events, but I’m no longer looking forward to any. Time to build my CGPA.’
A student from the Materials Science and Engineering Department also said, ‘Although the Anglomoz party was energetic and wonderful. I enjoyed the music, vibes, and meeting new people. The games and dance sessions were a major highlight, a perfect way to relax and bond after having a hectic day with registration. I have had enough for now, time to focus on my studies.’
