BREAKING NEWS: Management To Inaugurate Elected Students’ Union Officers

The long awaited inauguration of the elected Great Ife Students’ Union officers is imminent as the management of Obafemi Awolowo University is set for inauguration five months after elections.

The elections which held on Saturday 28th of August, 2021 for the Hall Executives Council, Wednesday 1st of September, 2021 for the Central Executives Council and Thursday 2nd of September, 2021 for the Students Representatives Council witnessed a large turnout from students after the reinstatement of the Union which was proscribed in 2017.

The inauguration which was formerly slated to hold after the rain semester examinations of the 2019/2020 academic session was truncated as a result of the protest that rocked the University on Friday 1st of October, 2021 over the death of Miss Adesina Aishat allegedly caused by the negligence and lackadaisical attitude of the workers at the University Health Centre. The deceased was before her death, a final year student of the Department of Foreign Languages.

The protest led to the closure of the school as well as disruption of the rain semester examination but was reopened on November 5th, 2021 for students to finish the rain semester examinations for the 2019/2020 academic session. It should also be noted that query letters were served to some Union officers-elect and student activists at the beginning of the 2021/2022 academic session as a result of the protest.

After several speculations as regards the inauguration of the elected union officers amidst issues surrounding the protest and the management’s position, recently, there has been hearsay from unconfirmed sources about the inauguration of the elected officers.

Speaking to the Chairman of the Great Ife Students’ Union Electoral Commission, Comrade Ajayi Oluwafemi popularly known as FM Castro, ACJ OAU Correspondent confirmed that the inauguration of the Students’ Union Officers-elect has been slated to hold on Thursday 3rd of March, 2022 by 12:00PM at Oduduwa Hall.
