ACJOAU Inducts New Members

The Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University(ACJOAU) holds its Induction Ceremony today after successfully recruiting a total number of fifty-three members into the association for the 2022/2023 academics session. Recall it was earlier shared on the association’s official X account that on the 18th of November, an examination and interview process was taken by intending members of the association.

The Induction Ceremony took place at the Social Science Lecture Theatre 2 with the theme, ‘ The Power Of Campus Journalism: Nurturing Tomorrow’s Media Leaders. The Speakers at the induction ceremony were, Mr. Yusuf Akinpelu, a Journalist for BBC News. , Ms. Blessing Akorowosi, Osun State Correspondent for Daily Champion, and Mr. Kabir Adejumo, Southern Operations Editor of Hum Angle Media.

In his speech, the President, Gbolahan Latinwo, spoke on shaping the responsibility of the newly inducted members of the association, on the power of disseminating unbiased information. He spoke to the inductees on their new journey; commitment to learning, growth, and innovation, to foster critical thinking, to instill the value of integrity and the ethics to make a good journalist. He noted that the challenges they will face will be a stepping stone toward aspirations in the media world.

Miss Blessing Akorowosi, a trained journalist with over 4 years of experience, started by congratulating the Inductees. She encouraged them to embrace opportunities and how important it is to know their nitch. She told them to start now because, at this stage, there are several opportunities to build good relationships. She further exposed them to the tips to note on Sensitive Reporting. Report on incidences like trauma, suicide, and gender-based violence. She further spoke on the need for a reporter to minimize graphics details, use sensitive language, and promote health-seeking. According to her, ‘Ignorance is not an excuse to expose people to danger’.

The erstwhile President of the Association, Faith Alofe, had a chit-chat with them. She spoke about Campus Journalism as a stepping ground, and a big leverage above what others know.

Mr. Kabir Adejumo, an alumnus of the association while speaking, shared his experiences while he was a member of ACJ at OAU. He spoke on being independent as a journalist, truthful, and unbiased in your report.

Yusuf Akinpelu, a West Africa BBC World Language Africa spoke on the advantages of good writing skills because it will help build writing capacity upon graduation.

The oath of Induction was taken and certificates of Induction were presented to the inductees. Prizes were awarded to Ogunlade David and Ogunlumade Favour as the second and third best inductees respectively. Oguntade Adedoyin was awarded a certificate and a cash prize as the overall best inductee.

Speaking to ACJOAU correspondent, Akinwande Esther, a newly inducted member of ACJOAU expressed her feelings about being a new member of ACJ, she feels fulfilled because it has been her dream to become a member of the association. According to her, she has taken a great step. She also sees it as an opportunity to meet new people. She prays that God will help her balance her academics and meet ACJ’s requirements.
