As part of the ongoing 2024/2025 academic session Freshers’ Week activities, a football match was held between the Staylites and the Freshers at the Sports Complex on Thursday, November 13. The match was organised by the Students’ Union Vice-President and drew a large crowd of students, with over 200 people in attendance to cheer and support their teams.
The event, which was scheduled to start at 12:00 PM, began later than planned. The match was divided into two parts, starting with the female teams before the male teams took over. The female match kicked off at 2:45 PM with high energy from both sides. Just six minutes into the game, the female Staylites scored their first goal, setting the pace for the rest of the match. By the end of the game at 3:34 PM, the female Staylites had scored a total of 7 goals, winning against the female Freshers, who were unable to score.

After a short break, the male teams stepped onto the pitch. The male match began at 3:43 PM. The Staylites opened the scoring at 4:15 PM, with Ademola Winner netting the first goal. However, the Freshers responded with a goal of their own at 4:52 PM, scored by Olayinika Ojelade. The game ended in a 1-1 draw at 5:05 PM, with both teams showing strong teamwork and skill.
In a short interview after the match, Inioluwa Olayinka, a member of the male Freshers’ team, shared his thoughts. He said, ‘The match was really good and enjoyable, but I felt they should have given us extra time; the experience was good, though.’
Overall, the event was a lively and fun-filled part of Freshers’ Week, giving new students a chance to bond, relax, and enjoy the spirit of competition. The match also highlighted the talent and energy within the student body, making it one of the most exciting activities of the week so far.
