A storm in the early hours of Thursday, 16th of May, collapsed some parts of the OAU Amphitheatre‘s under-roof during the SER 001 – Use of English lecture, a core special elective course for fresh students in the University, leaving some students in the theatre to sustain severe injuries.
The fatal occurrence had some students taking the course severely injured as they were rescued and attended to by their colleagues thereby rushing them to the University’s Health Centre but two of them were later referred to the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital. Due to a lack of medical equipment, the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital further referred them to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex.
OAUTHC Admits Two Injured Students, VC, DSA Pay Visit
The two students referred to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex were admitted and currently responding to medical treatments.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Simeon Bamire was at the scene of admission of the injured students into the hospital.
As of Press Hour, the Dean, of the Division of Student Affairs, Prof. Odedire is still at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex.
Amphitheatre Sealed Off Until Further Notice
In a Press Statement made available to ACJOAU, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution appealed for calm and urged students and staff to go about their academic and administrative activities without any form of untoward action
The scene where the incident occurred inside the Amphitheatre and the outside have been barricaded with caution tape and sealed off as of the time of filing this report by the management until further notice.
