The new academic year of Obafemi Awolowo University which began in October 2024, has been filled with rigorous activities, coupled with the just-concluded 48th convocation ceremony. With a schedule of academic activities and other programs in place, many students had been anticipating a two-week Christmas and New Year break commencing next week.
However, there is no record of the festive break on the current University’s academic calendar, causing concern among the students.

As of the hour of filing this report, the University Management has yet to issue any official statement regarding the festive break.
ACJOAU gathered that despite the silence from the University Management, several students have embarked on festive holidays, travelling to their respective homes to celebrate the yuletide with their families.
Recall that, the Great Ife Student Union, in an official release, announced the provision of buses to convey students to their respective homes in distant locations such as Lagos, Ibadan and Abeokuta, offering subsidized transportation charges for the students.

Meanwhile, there is a circulating claim on WhatsApp that the University has only approved December 25th, 26th and January 1st as public holidays.
ACJOAU in a telephone interview with the University Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, stated that he is unaware of any developments regarding an official announcement of the festive break.
‘I am not aware of that. I am not aware of whether we will give or we will not give’, the PRO said.
