OAU lecturer Goes Physical With Student, Great Ife Students’ Union Reacts

In the early hours of Wednesday, 8th of November, a video surfaced online where a lecturer identified as Dr. K.F. Ariyo of the Electronic and Electrical Engineering department was seen going physical with a Part 2 student of Physics and Engineering Physics department.

According to reports gathered by ACJOAU, the student known as Gift mistakenly got into Dr. Ariyo’s class, and as soon as he realized he was in the wrong class, he made a move to leave. However, Gift was called back by Dr. Ariyo and was alleged of impersonation. As such, Gift showed his ID card, but it did not improve the situation. 

Dr. Ariyo still not satisfied with the situation called the security unit of the institution who came to whisk him away.  Hell was let loose when Gift decided to call or reach out to someone on his phone as Dr. Ariyo insisted that his phone be switched off, thereby leading to punching from the lecturer on Gift.  

Great Ife Students’ Union Reacts

In a release by the Students’ Union, it was stated that the Union is opposed to the impulsive action by the lecturer and describes it as ‘a show of absurdity’. The Students’ Union seeks management action on the matter. The demands of the Students’ Union include punishing Dr. Ariyo according to the school rules and regulations, restoring the properties of the assaulted student, demanding an open hearing, and a public apology from Dr. Ariyo to all OAU students.

Furthermore, Students’ Union request that the lecturer in question and the department as a whole make a commitment not to victimize both the victim and the students of the class being taught by Dr. Ariyo.

Finally, the Union urges all students to be vigilant and conscious students, asking them to report all forms of vices and harassment.
