Mountaineering: OAU Freshmen Share Experiences

Overtime, mountaineering has become a major part of the Fresher’s Week activities for Obafemi Awolowo University new students in Faculty, Departmental, Indigenous and Students’ Union orientation plans.  Thanks to the institution monuments and gorgeous mountains, many people are usually captivated by the breathtaking view of the mountains that surround the school. These towering peaks have become an iconic part of the campus life, serving as an alluring backdrop for a variety of events ranging from religious gatherings to breathtaking photoshoots and casual hangouts.

The Fresher’s week is a week planned event for freshmen to welcome fresh students to the university and orient or educate Freshmen about the university’s rules and regulations, and also departments and hall of residence conducts and guidelines. The week event also include fun activities like debates competitions, fresher’s parties, mountaineering, Bonfire night, sport competitions and other fun activities . Mountaineering exercise are often organized by departmental or faculty executives.

Although many freshmen are often excited in participating in the exercise, however, it doesn’t change the fact that participants must walk a considerable distance from their various convergence points to the high mountain top ,hence the event can be physically taxing.

Mautin Methozuveh, a part 1 student in the department of Linguistics and African languages, described how tiring but also enjoyable the mountaineering was. She mentioned that they had a good time, although the walk and climbing was exhausting and that they needed to take glucose and water and rest at some point. she also shared a funny scenerio of how some of her course mates were backed while climbing down from the mountain. The highlight of the day for her was the giveaway and game sessions.

In an interview with ACJOAU Correspondent, Oluwaseyi Daniel, from the faculty of Science, who couldn’t contain his excitement as he recount how fun the event was for him and his department freshmen. According to him , the view of the university from the mountain top was top notch and he is really excited about the pictures he took.

Also, Tolulope Olajumoke, from Faculty of Science expressed how he felt the mountaineering, was a great opportunity for him and his mates to test their limits and have friendly relationships in his words, ‘I learned that when you have the support of your fellow adventurers, you can overcome even the toughest challenges. It was a day that showed me the beauty of nature, the strength we have inside, and the importance of teamwork. It’s an adventure I’ll always remember’.

 Another Part one student, Idowu Mary, also spoke about how she enjoyed the view of the university from the mountain top and how she was able to take nice pictures with her friends stating that she can say that the day is still the best day of fresher’s week for her.

While, some fresh students did not feel obligated to participate in the mountaineering because it is not mandatory, few others were unable to participate because they were exhausted from the other stress work that the Fresher’s week entails, such as department registrations, faculty registrations, and tutorials. Nonetheless, some freshmen still believe that the Fresher’s week only comes once and they are prepared to enjoy every minute of it.
