The OAU Medical Students’ Association, IFUMSA, has organized a remarkable Medical Outreach in Ikire, Osun State, bringing together medical professionals, students, and volunteers to provide essential healthcare services to the community. The event, held on Saturday July 1st, 2023, witnessed an outpouring of dedication and compassion as individuals from different walks of life joined forces to make a tangible difference in the lives of those in need.

Under the banner of the Medical Outreach, a multitude of healthcare services were provided to address the diverse medical needs of the community. The event featured general check-ups, vaccinations, health education sessions, as well as mini surgeries for community members requiring specialized care. The array of services aimed to bridge the gap between underserved communities and healthcare facilities.
The Hall at the Akire Palace, erected with precision and efficiency, was a beehive of activity as doctors and medical students worked tirelessly to deliver quality healthcare services. Patients received thorough examinations and consultations, with free medications provided to those requiring treatment. The dedication and expertise of the medical professionals were evident, as they went above and beyond to ensure every individual received the care they deserved.
While some underwent minor surgeries which was conducted at St. Jude Hospital, close to the Akire Palace, services such as cervical cancer screening, hepatitis B screening, amongst others were rendered free of charge to members of the community. A total of 11 minor surgeries were conducted at the Outreach.
In addition to the on-site medical services, a session was conducted at a local secondary school, where students were educated on various health topics. The interactive discussions, led by the medical students actively engaged students of Goodness Comprehensive College, providing them with vital health information and guidance on leading healthier lifestyles. Valuable information on sexual hygiene and the importance of skin care were shared, with the students displaying enthusiasm and a thirst for knowledge.

The impact of the Medical Outreach extended beyond immediate medical care. It fostered a sense of community and camaraderie, with various individuals and health organizations joining hands with IFUMSA to support the cause. Donations of medical supplies, equipment, and refreshments poured in, enabling a seamless and efficient execution of the event. The collective effort and collaboration of all stakeholders exemplified the power of unity in addressing community health challenges.
Speaking with one of the organizers, Kehinde Oloyede, a final year student of Medicine OAU, who is also the Chairman, IFUMSA Health Awareness Club highlighted the importance of such outreach programs and expressed her satisfaction in advancing the club’s vision of ‘wholesome health for all.’ According to her, although they encountered a few challenges putting the event together, they were able to surmount all, resulting in the success of the event.
Also, Favour Omodara, a Final Year student of Medicine and Chairman, LOC (Local Organizing Committee), emphasized the importance of offering complimentary healthcare services to underprivileged individuals, stressing the significance of reaching out to those in need. She expressed her joy in bringing the Medical Outreach to the community and conveyed deep appreciation for the chance to serve and make a positive impact on the lives of community members.
Speaking to beneficiaries, their gratitude and appreciation for the Medical Outreach were palpable. Chief Oyeniyi Olayioye, a Community Chief and beneficiary of the event, expressed his heartfelt thanks for the thorough check-up and medication he received. He highlighted the importance of such initiatives in bringing healthcare closer to those who struggle to access it due to financial constraints.
The parents of children who underwent mini surgeries during the event also expressed their profound gratitude. Mr. Ismail Adewale, a parent, commended the expertise and dedication of the medical team, emphasizing the positive impact the surgery had on his child’s health and well-being. The relief and improved quality of life experienced by these families underscored the significance of the Medical Outreach.
