Budget Hearing: Great Ife SRC Approves Over 1 Million For The Office Of The President

The Great Ife Students Representative Council had on Friday, held a budget and finance sitting for the 2022/2023 parliamentary year. Recall it was earlier reported by ACJOAU, that the house kicked against the petition seeking to conduct Union elections in the Harmattan Semester subsequently.

Giving clarification on the Union’s annual due, the Speaker of the SRC, RT. Hon Yusuf Ganiyu, stated that the union due was ₦300 before but now ₦1000 due to the increase in school fees. This annual due is one that is being paid by every student of the university and it is already part of the school fees. However, the money is yet to be disbursed into the Union’s account.

Speaking further, he said the Halls of Residence due was initially ₦300 per occupant but it is now ₦1000. Although no sitting was held to decide this, some officials of the Union met with the authorities of the Division Of Students’ Affairs before the new price was approved.

Thereafter, the Financial Secretary of the Union, Fasina Damilare Ezekiel, was called upon to give a statement of account of the Union. According to him, he stated that upon resolving the issues with the account after the inauguration of the Union officials on Wednesday, 12th of July, 2023, the balance that the new administration met was ₦5,751.29. However, The current balance in the Union’s account following money generated from SUB Ventures by the present administration is ₦119,071.29.

For the office of the President, a total of ₦469,000 was approved for some items which include a Printer, Laptop, Data and card, gum, and envelope among other things.

For the security committee, there was a deliberation among the Honourables as to whether the budget should be addressed at the moment or not. Honourable Lydia from Faculty of Law suggested that since the members of the security committee have not been officially ratified yet, their budget should not be addressed.

The Public Relations Officer of the Union, Omisore Eijah, however, asked if it is a crime to present a supplementary budget. According to him, the budget for the security committee can be approved and a supplementary one brought up if needed. However, the majority of Honourables voted for the budget for the security committee to be unattended to yet.

Another part of the budget of the office of the President which was approved is the Zebra Crossing and Speed Bump project. A total of ₦197,000 was eventually approved for this project with materials such as paint, rollers, tapes, and workmanship.

Consequently, the Speaker moved to the budget for Fundraising, Intervention, and Familiarization. The total amount that was budgeted for short trips was ₦375,000; ₦25,000 for 15 trips. For the long trip, ₦500,000 was budgeted; ₦50,000 for 10 trips. The total for these trips is ₦875,000. Eventually, a total sum of ₦1,541,000 was approved for the office of the President.
