The Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University conducted its election for the 2023/2024 academic session on, Saturday, 1st of June, at the Association’s Secretariat at Fajuyi Hall. The election saw Olabode Oluwafemi announced as the 52nd President-elect of the association.
The election process began on Thursday, May 30th with the screening of candidates by the electoral committee, followed by a Debate & Manifesto on Friday, May 31st and concluded with a free and fair election on Saturday, 1st of June.
The election had a total vote cast of 43 even though many of the candidates were unopposed. However, the office of the President had two candidates: Awotunde Theophilus Adeniyi, the outgoing General Secretary of the association from Icons Organization and Olabode Oluwafemi, an erstwhile Editor-in-Chief of OAU Kilonshele and the outgoing Public Relations Officer of the association.
Olabode Oluwafemi was declared the winner for the post of the President by the Electoral Committee’s Chairman having secured a total of 29 votes against his opponent Awotunde Theophilus Adeniyi who had 13 votes with a void from the office.
The candidates for the other positions are:
Vice President, Olatimehin Esther – 39 votes, 4 No votes. WINNER
Chairman, Guild of Editors: Adeniran Tolulope – 34 votes, 8 No votes, 1 void. WINNER
General Secretary: Amosu Sharon – 34 votes, 9 No votes. WINNER
Public Relations Officer: Ogunlade David – 37 votes, 5 No votes, 1 void. WINNER
Financial Secretary: Ojegbola Mercy – 39 votes, 4 No votes. WINNER
Assistant General Secretary: Ogunwale Matthew – 40 votes, 3 No votes. WINNER
According to the electoral committee chairman, Adekunle Famuyiwa, ‘This election has the highest number of voters turnout in the history of association in recent times. He noted that the screening process was thorough and the committee has done holistic justice to its mandate. He also thanked all the association and electoral committee members for their participation and cooperation before, during and after the election’.
The elected executives’ swearing-in will occur at the association’s dinner and award night after the rain semester examination. The electoral committee congratulates the newly elected executives and hopes that their administration will be favourable to the association’s members.
