2023 FRESHMEN SPORTS FIESTA: Faculty of Arts Loses Title, Administration Sets New Record

The closing ceremony of the Freshmen Sports Fiesta organized by the Office of the Director of Sports, Great Ife Students’ Union, a competition to integrate the freshmen into the sporting activities of the University just like a line in the Great Ife Anthem ‘Sports And Struggle’, held on Tuesday 28th November, 2023.

In a heated final football match between Faculties of Administration and Arts which held at Mainbowl, had the Faculty of Administration who got disqualified during the last Freshmen Sports Fiesta, after losing in the semi-final became the best Freshmen Team, won the match against the Faculty of Arts who won the Freshmen football competition last year.

In attendance was Akinfair Cyrus, a representative from Lottery and Games Nig. Ltd, one of the sponsors of the event, the Director of Sports Council, OAU, Alhaja Dr. Omobola Tijani, Prof. Rufus Adedoyin from the College of Health Sciences amongst other dignitaries.

The match started at exactly 04:07 pm and less than three minutes after the kickoff, a free kick was taken by the captain of the Faculty of Administration which resulted in a goal. At exactly 9 minutes into the game, a goal was ruled out in favor of the faculty of administration despite the jubilation of a player from the Faculty of Arts.

12 minutes into the game, another goal was scored through a free kick taken in favour of the Faculty of Administration. A dominant first half saw the team go into the break with a deserved 2-0 lead.

The second half started on a high note for the Faculty of Arts team, as they were able to secure several chances. 20 minutes toward the end of the second half, the Faculty of Arts took advantage after a mistake from the keeper of the Faculty of Administration.

The match ended 2-1 in favor of the Faculty of Administration which gave them the upper hand in the Freshmen Sports Fiesta, Football segment making them the winner of the competition.

In an interview with ACJOAU Correspondent, the Director of Sports of the Great Ife Students’ Union who was represented by the Chairperson of the Sport Fiesta Committee, Stella Odunayo Akanji, said ‘My experience during this fiesta was actually an amazing experience due to the fact that I was the Secretary to the Former Director of Sports during to his administration. I have experience and was able to know how things were done. So as the chairperson for this fiesta, it was not something I would call a big deal because I have experience in the field so it was easy. The only challenging part was funds. There was not much fund but the little we got we were able to utilise them to make the events unforgettable memories for this year Freshmen’.

Expressing his excitement after the victory, the coach of the Faculty of Administration Freshmen team, Bello Olatunde, said ‘Today’s match was interesting, tough, but all glory to God for coming out victorious and thanks to our fans that supported us from every faculty and the Great Faculty of Administration.
